First Choice Coffee Services
Actual may vary.
- Des Moines metro
- Greater Des Moines area
- Surrounding Iowa communities
First Choice runs one of the bigger office coffee operations in the country, and their Des Moines branch gives Iowa businesses direct access to that scale. They carry Starbucks, Peet’s, and a rotating mix of local roasters, which covers most office tastes. We consider them a strong pick for mid-to-large workplaces that want name-brand variety without juggling multiple vendors. Their Blue Tiger program adds a craft coffee option, though it’s not available everywhere. Setup is quick, usually three to five business days.

Host Coffee Service
Actual may vary.
- Omaha metro
- Lincoln metro
- Sioux City, Iowa
- Des Moines, Iowa
- Parts of South Dakota
Host Coffee is a family-run operation out of Omaha that’s been at it since the early ’70s. They hold authorized vendor status for both Starbucks and Keurig, which isn’t something every regional provider can claim. Their Iowa coverage hits Sioux City and Des Moines, plus they push into South Dakota. We’d put them near the top of the list for Iowa businesses that want a hands-on, locally owned provider with real brand partnerships. They also source from local roasters, so the coffee quality tends to run above average.

Canteen
Actual may vary.
- Des Moines / Grimes
- Cedar Rapids / Hiawatha
- Pella
- Clarinda (franchise partner Smith Vending)
- Statewide Iowa coverage through corporate and franchise network
Canteen is the 800-pound gorilla in this space. They’ve been around since 1929 and run over 225 locations across 48 states, so supply chain depth isn’t an issue. Their Des Moines branch in Grimes handles the central Iowa market, with additional locations in Cedar Rapids and Pella. We see them as the safest choice for large employers that need a single vendor across coffee, vending, micro markets, and dining. The trade-off is that service can feel less personal than what you’d get from a smaller local operator. Their portfolio of 75+ artisan roasters is a nice touch, though.

Friedrichs Coffee
Actual may vary.
- Des Moines metro
- Urbandale
- West Des Moines
- Greater Des Moines area (contacts welcome from outside metro)
Friedrichs is the hometown roaster option in Des Moines, and they’ve built a real following since 1991. They roast everything in small batches at their Urbandale headquarters using European drum roasters, which gives their coffee a noticeably different flavor profile than the big national brands. We think they’re an ideal fit for offices that want locally roasted beans and a more personal touch. They lend out equipment at no charge and deliver on a regular schedule. Three retail cafes around Des Moines keep them connected to what coffee drinkers actually want. Not the biggest, but the quality speaks for itself.

Smith Vending Canteen

- Southwest Iowa (Adams, Appanoose, Audubon, Calhoun, Carroll, Cass, Crawford, Davis, Decatur, Fremont, Greene, Guthrie, Harrison, Ida, Mills, Monroe, Montgomery, Page, Pottawattamie, Ringgold, Sac, Shelby, Taylor, Union, Wapello, Wayne counties)
- Southeast Nebraska
- Northwest Missouri (Atchison, Gentry, Harrison, Nodaway, Worth counties)
Smith Vending runs a Canteen franchise out of Clarinda with satellite warehouses in Denison and Ottumwa, which gives them solid coverage across rural southwest Iowa. They manage 266 office coffee locations, 67 micro markets, and nearly 1,000 vending machines with a team of 42 people. It’s a family operation now led by second-generation owner Ashilyn Sunderman. We’d recommend them for businesses in smaller Iowa communities where the big national players don’t always show up. Their Vending Market Watch profile confirms strong industry standing. The 3.4 Google rating is below average, but review volume is low.
